In the third year, students are given increased independence in the development of their ideas and design, but are provided with more tools to improve upon their process. There is a stronger emphasis on the professional practice of Graphic Design. Course content provides a deeper understanding of typography, layout and image integration. Web and time-based media is investigated with more depth. Overall projects gain complexity with much emphasis on systems design and understanding context for user and media-appropriate solutions.
The primary design courses and electives delve further into specific areas of the field of Graphic Design. Areas covered include corporate identity and branding, advanced typography, illustration and design for three-dimensions such as packaging and environments.
Internships are encouraged in the second semester or during the summer before year four. Internships provide an opportunity to apply acquired design skills to a real-world environment, where students gain formal on-site working experience, exposure to various career options, and form professional contacts and develop additional marketable skills outside of the classroom. All students are required to complete at least three credits of internship to complete the degree.
